New York’s Biggest Block Party

I will admit it. I am a perfectionist. This summer’s goal: to have a perfect New York summer (inexpensively). This means I will be heading to every free concert, outdoor movie screening, parade, and street fair that time, reason, and an Unlimited MetroCard will allow. And of course sharing the perfect outfits to accompany these urban adventures.

First up was the 32nd annual Museum Mile Festival, otherwise known as “New York’s Biggest Block Party.” Chalk drawing, street vendors, musicians, and free entry to all the museums on the 23 blocks between 82nd and 105th streets on Fifth Avenue? Perfect. Plus it’s always fun to walk (and do some chalk drawing!) right in the middle of Fifth Avenue without risking death from oncoming traffic.

One of my favorite chalk drawings:

With so much of interest on the street, I could barely pull myself away to get inside the museums. But I did manage to enter the Met and the Guggenheim, despite long, long lines. “Picasso in the Metropolitan Museum of Art” was a personal favorite, and the exhibition room featuring Blue Period paintings was particularly stunning:

Although the Museum Mile Festival has come and gone, the Picasso exhibition continues until August, so put your free admission as Columbia students to good use!

And as promised, my pick for the perfect museum-going dress:

P.S. Check out the annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island this Saturday the 19th!

Hot, Sweaty, Perfect Mess

What better subject for a first summer post than the summer heat—in all its make-up melting, sweat-provoking glory. Whether you’re fanning yourself with a New York Times T Magazine in our 116th Street station or boarding a bus with unbelievably moist yellow hand rails in Florence, everyone is bound to have their run-in with some sweaty public transportation this summer. Below are a few face-saving tips:

1. Benefit’s Dr. Feelgood ($28)—generously dab this matifier on in the morning and you’ll stay less-than-glossy the whole day through.

2. Secret Clinical Strength Waterproof Antiperspirant/Deodorant ($9.99, at drugstores)—you may not be at the pool, but the pools of sweat collecting on your back (real romantic, I know) during a long subway ride are enough to warrant the “Waterproof” strength.

3. Tokyo Milk Perfume ($28, at Anthropologie)—such prevailingly fresh scents as “I Want Candy” (crisp apples, peaches, violets, roses)  and “Kabuki” (grapefruit, litchi, and sweet jasmine) will keep you smelling good even when fellow commuters do not.

4. Sephora Collection Eye Primer Pot ($8)—sultry summer dates call for sultry eyeshadow. This will keep the smoky eye from becoming a smoky cheek.

5. And when all else fails, rubber-band your sweaty, frizzy hair back into a messy bun, wipe your sweaty brow with your new tank top, and rock it like glistening was your goal all along.

Spring/Summer 2010 is Out in Print!

While Hoot was cramming studying for final exams, we happened to receive our print copies of the Spring/Summer 2010 issue! They are marvelously glossy, durable, and small enough to hide behind our textbooks in class. Thank you so much to CUarts, the Cooperberg family, and the Duan family for funding our first issue! Interested in advertising with us in the future? Email us at advertise@hootmag.org!

Even though we’re on summer vacation, we’ve begun working on our next issue. If you’re interested in joining Hoot, send us an email at info@hootmag.org. We have a lot of positions open, and we’re willing to train! Also, keep an eye out for our new website!

Allan and Suzi’s

Walking into this corner store boutique is like sneaking into a conglomeration of the closets of several famous designers, and perhaps even a few famous cross dressers. Here you can find beautifully crafted blouses, slick biker jackets, mini-skirts, beautiful gowns, sundresses, and other rare finds that line the racks and walls. Everything in the store is one-of-a-kind, you won’t see it again on the racks and you might never see it again period. Allan and Suzi can boast designer items alongside their rare and retro looks, such as this beautiful Christian Lacroix dress…

…as well as some finds from various decades. Allan and Suzi have also had a hand in dressing an impressive list of stars. The shop owners refer to the stores as “The Home of Retro Fashion”, a perfect description. I managed to pick up a gorgeous black dress from the 40s, with subtle sequin detailing along the sides (Sorry, as I said, there was only one in the store!).

There are certainly some more daring outfit choices, such as an animal print one-piece with some seriously risqué cut outs, which are fun to see. Most of the styles are wearable, and a great price for their rarity and condition. Also, if you’re lucky enough to have those feet that seem to magically fit into every pair of shoes, there is a great selection of flashy boots and heels.

This is the perfect place to pop in to try on some looks for fun, or to seriously shop for that ideal item to top off an outfit, so get there! Allan and Suzi is located at 416 Amsterdam Ave., at 80th street. So close for us Columbians!

Country Getaway

Columbia’s biggest attraction is, of course, New York City. Slowly, even those who hail from around the world eventually begin to think of themselves as New Yorkers – it’s impossible not to get caught up in the bustle and energy of the city. However, now that finals are approaching, I am reminiscing wistfully about soon escaping back to a more simpler, slower pace of life in my hometown in the suburbs of Chicago. Native New Yorkers may guffaw but as much as I love the animation of Manhattan, a whole world in just a tiny island filled to the brim with everything you may need, I miss the lack of cluttered storefronts and one way streets. I find myself thinking about the trees in my backyard, the open highways, the large expanses of green unmarked by green or red flags… Seems like I’m not the only one thinking of a pastoral change of scene either – pretty pastoral looks flooded Spring 2010 runways.

Dainty Florals

Remove the black nail polish, wipe off the smudged eyeliner, put away those torn skinny jeans and pack up the black leather jackets. Don a pretty, light, summery dress and even edgy New York girls can be sweet.  Pair with a dandelion crown and you’re good to go! (Remember making those in your childhood? Or was it just me?)

Light Country Patterns

Plaid and gingham always evoke a sense of homely nostalgia like sitting on the porch eating warm cherry pie and downing cold apple cider…except my family’s Chinese so basically we were wholly lacking in the desert/sweets department and had tea or this cold green-bean soup thing that was only barely sweet instead, but one can imagine no? Also, check out that awesome Vivienne Westwood straw hat with a frog on top!

The Milkmaid Look

I put this one up because my French professor (Vincent Aurora any one?) of whom I am a huge fan went on a energetic rant about milking cows and goats in Bulgaria during our last class today. I now know the French verb for “to milk an animal” is traire, “to breastfeed” is allaiter, and lacter is only used in scientific terms for “to lactate” – who knew the French were so specific about milk? So while I’m not sure how practical this look is (the braids are pretty awesome! Think Sienna Miller during the 2007 Golden Globes), it’s my small tribute to one of Vincent’s many entertaining tangents.

So now that I’ve bombarded you with everything that is not New York, is anyone interested in taking a basket-weaving class with me? Just kidding. Sort of.

Online Excursions

Needless to say, summer is fast approaching, and for many of us, that means saying goodbye to New York City and all its shopping. Which is lucky for our wallets, but unlucky for our closets.

So, the quickest way to satiate your fashion palette: online shopping. Of course, we all know the shopbops and blueflys of online shopping, but I wanted to share a couple of my newly found and newly favorite sites. They also, for the most part, are more reasonably priced than more well-known, super-designer sites.

The first is actually an online extension of a SoHo boutique—www.pixiemarket.com (the physical boutique is located on 100 Stanton St b/t Orchard and Ludlow Sts.

Their style is a little feminine, a little rocker but definitely all unique New York. Take, for example, the Ida Sjostedt’s Lace Ruffle Top ($288) and Horace’s Black Loose Knit Sweater ($139), both pictured below. Most designers on the site are foreign up-and-comers. Hop on the bandwagon now before it’s actually a bandwagon.

PixieMarket.com

And for once, the online shopping experience is far better than the in-store one. In Pixie Market’s tiny SoHo space, the often-textured and draped pieces are all squished together onto insufficient racks. The in-store selection also seems to be on the whole darker and less “pretty.” Meanwhile, PixieMarket.com has something to intrigue everyone, and uber-organized site makes for an easygoing shopping experience.

Second on my list is www.asos.com. Although this site features higher end favorites like Reiss and other well-knowns like French Connection, I find that the best finds are from the site’s namesake brand ASOS. It’s especially great for work-chic (summer internship anyone) pieces at extremely reasonable prices, like the ASOS Cross Hatch Linen Dress ($54.11).

ASOS.com

The only downside is that it’s a UK site, which means UK sizing. Unless you happen to shop often in jolly old London, it can be a bit tricky. They have fairly helpful sizing charts, but be prepared for your self-esteem to take a numbers blow—a UK 6 equates to a teeny US size 2.

Since the site is based in the UK, you would also think that shipping fees would be bloody brutal. Fortunately, the ASOS offers a $6 flat rate—i.e. cheaper than most shipping fees from Brooklyn to Manhattan.

Premiere Issue: Spring/Summer 2010

Hoot is proud to have done some interesting and exciting things in its first year — from two successful clothing swaps to the high-profile Asian Americans in the Fashion Industry panel discussion that has been featured on Style.com already (recap coming soon). However, Hoot was formed to start a campus fashion magazine — and so we did.

Today, we are proud to present the fruit of our efforts, starring the favorite self-described “crazy” lady of “Real Housewives of New York City,” Kelly Killoren Bensimon (GS ‘98). Why? Well, because we, members of the Columbia community, are nothing alike — and we hope to embrace our differences in the magazine, whether we dress by strict orthodox rules or we play up the drama for television.

Once again, thank you so much to everyone who believed in us and took a chance on us. We’ve come a long way since our initial 4-person meetings in Ferris Booth Lounge, and we’re planning on getting better and bigger with time. We want to reach out to the fashion-driven community on campus, and provide a medium for discussion and information.

Feel free to email us at info@hootmag.org with any questions, suggestions, or concerns — or even if you just want to join our team. We have a lot planned for this summer, and we’d love for you to see what we’re about!

Print issue is coming out soon. Stay tuned for the launch of our new website, too!

Love,

Hoot staff
