Armani and Academia

Okay, Yale will boast that their campus looks like Hogwarts (as will UPenn, Harvard, Vassar, etc.), but we, here at Columbia, can boast that our campus is minimalist and cool enough for the Emporio Armani Fall/Winter 2011/2012 campaign. Remember this?

If only we look like Karmen Pedera and Marlon Teixeira when we walk to class.

How would you describe your style?
I’d say that my style is a sort of quirky mix of colors and patterns, but lately I’ve been venturing into a more bohemian, easy sort of style.

When did you first become interested in fashion?
I’ve always like to adorn myself in different ways- as a child I’d obsessively wear certain items over and over, like a gigantic tutu, a striped swimsuit, or huge amounts of bracelets. I only became interested and mentally immersed in the multi-faceted fashion industry near the end of middle school when I began to subscribe to W.

Where do you take your style inspiration from? What are you currently inspired by?
I take a lot of my fashion inspiration from books- I like to imagine how characters dress and then experiment from there. I take cues from a few higher profile fashionistas, most notably Nicole Richie, Susie Lau of Susie Bubble, Rumi Neeley of Fashiontoast, and the late Talitha Pol. The Anna Sui and Karen Zambos Vintage couture collections also really attract me, even though I don’t own anything from those lines. Perhaps in the future.

Where are your favorite places to shop?
I prefer larger department stores, like Barneys, Bergdorf’s and Bloomingdale’s, to small boutiques so that I can look at a larger selection of clothing at once. Shopbop and Revolve clothing are my go-to online shops.

Tell us about your most recent purchase.
I just purchased a colorful Winter Kate chiffon tank dress from ShopBop. I’ll admit it was an impulsive decision, but I have the same tank in black and I have to force myself not to wear it almost every day.

What are your “wardrobe basics?”
Scarves- I tend to wear those more than any other one item. I like to wear them looped or unlooped around my neck, or tied around my head or around a ponytail. I also usually carry a Goyard bag- they’re by far my favorite bag designer, though they’re also known for trunks, luggage, and other small accessories.

What is your spring must-have item?
I’d love to get a pair of flat beaded mini-boots.

Channeling Blair Waldorf at Columbia

The CW Network, LLC

In case you didn’t watch last Monday’s episode of Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf might be transferring to Columbia University. According to Dorota, her maid — played by the incredibly talented Zuzanna Szadkowski (BC ‘02) — , “Even NYU minions: very second-rate.” None of us at Hoot thought NYU was a good fit for her anyways.

In this episode, Blair’s fashion designer mother, Eleanor Waldorf, asks Blair to bring 30 of her closest friends from NYU to her fashion show. The problem is, Blair doesn’t have any friends, except for her “second-rate” minions. Blair ends up hiring 30 prostitutes to pose as her friends for the event. At the end of the fashion show, three doting girls from Columbia approached her and told them that they missed seeing her on the Gossip Girl blog. “Everyone at Columbia reads Gossip Girl,” they claimed. Apparently Bwog has another rival. At the end of the episode, Blair is seen tacking a Columbia banner to her bedroom wall. Welcome to Morningside Heights, Miss Waldorf.

Okay, so Blair grew out of the extravagant headbands and knee-high socks, but she still carries a formidable style that we can all channel for our own good. After all, she dresses with a purpose and a mission, so whether we prefer flea market finds or Barneys couture, we can all take some tips for dressing purposely à la Blair Waldorf:

The CW Network, LLC

  • Overdress for every occasion. When you’re looking to make a statement and to intimidate (Blair’s favorite extracurricular activity), you should always put on your highest pair of Louboutins and wear your smartest dress. Professors will appreciate your tidiness, students will gape at your clacking heels on College Walk, and minions will come flocking with you. Maybe.
  • Be classic. No important businessperson or politician will ever be offended by your way of dress if you opt for classic, clean, and timeless pieces. Always remember that vulgarities are reserved for the non-elite — and Serena van der Woodsen. Sometimes, she doesn’t wear underwear. Blair Waldorf, however, would probably for a simple nude Calvin Klein g-string or fancy La Perla briefs.
  • Emulate a style icon consistently. Blair admires Audrey Hepburn for her graceful style and character. For our blue-blood American preppies, what about Grace Kelly for her American royalty demeanor? Or for our rebels with a purpose, what about Vivienne Westwood, with her orange hair and legacy to new wave punk?

Follow these guidelines, and Blair just might pick you as her minion when she transfers to campus next fall. Or you just might usurp her Queen Bee throne. Even if you’re wearing last year’s Tory Burch flats.

Armani Site Visit

So we may have missed the aforementioned Armani photo shoot, but we’ll be getting the next best thing—arguably better, even!  On April 16th, the Giorgio Armani Group will be open it’s doors to Columbia students for a site visit. The team will enlighten students on all the ins and outs of Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, and Retail Intelligence, as well as discuss resume building and how to best market yourself in today’s competitive fashion business world.  Best of the best: they will discuss available internships and full-time job opportunities, and top the day off with a tour of the office.  Personally, I’m already completely giddy.

Like you need to be reminded (and if you do, that’s quite alright), though Armani’s first focus was menswear, he has since branched out into other areas like accessories, eyewear, watches, jewelry, cosmetics, etc.. This doesn’t mean he’s lost any focus in his male-style eye. He did, after all, design the suit of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) in Dark Knight.

Here are some of Giorgio Armani’s looks from his Spring/Summer 2010 line:

Armani on Broadway

Bwog.net

Bwog.net

According to our lovely friends at Bwog, there was an Armani photoshoot on Broadway today! Unfortunately, we were too busy basking in the sun to check out the scene ourselves — but you can visit Bwog for more photos!

To our dismay, this wasn’t an Armani underwear advertisement à la David Beckham.

On the Campus Radar: Take A Girl To College

In the spirit of those high school friends hearing back from colleges tomorrow, “Take A Girl To College” on Friday, April 2nd.

Hosted by Women in Science at Columbia (WISC), this all day event brings young ladies from across the city  and from disadvantaged circumstances to the Morningside Campus to spend a day in the life of a Columbia woman. They will shadow both undergraduate and graduate students, and volunteer positions include bringing girls to class and helping out with a lunchtime scavenger hunt.

It’s supposed to be a sunny volunteer day anyway — and who knows, maybe you’ll even recruit a future Hootette!

La Mode Française: President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy

Getty Images

President Nicolas Sarkozy of the French Republic came to speak at Columbia University’s World Leaders Forum today — and to the joyful surprise of the fashion-obsessed community (and, well, straight male population) on campus, his wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, was in attendance too. The event was overbooked and our very own Parisian and Menswear Editor, Martin Hamery (CC ‘13), was unable to get in for this reason, but our Features Director, Allison Malecha (CC ‘13), was able to snag a second row, center seat and our Co-Editor in Chief, Noel Duan (CC ‘13), was able to snag a fourth row seat — right behind Sarkozy and Bruni-Sarkozy! The former supermodel was sporting an elegant but simple chignon, plain conservative black top, and formfitting but classic gray pencil skirt.

While we may not all agree with the calls for change in Sarkozy’s speech — from the instigation of a new international monetary order to reformation of structure in the United Nations Security Council — we can tell that Sarkozy has a lot of charisma and belief in his ideas. He refused to read from a speech and prompted a lot of laughter from the audience, in spite of the political controversies happening in France and the economic and political problems around the world.

Eric Kutscher

For more information about Sarkozy’s actual speech, look to recaps from Bwog and Columbia Daily Spectator. He will be dining privately with President Barack Obama tomorrow — “Please extend to him our very best regards from his alma mater,” added our dear President Lee Bollinger. We’re doing everything we can to get back on Mr. President’s good side.

However, First Lady fashion is rarely over looked. In the United States, we venerate Michelle Obama and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, but Bruni-Sarkozy was one of the top twenty highest paid models in the world, back in the ’90s. Italian-born but Swiss boarding school-bred, she signed with City Models at age nineteen and has worked with designers and fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent. She is also a singer, with three albums to date. “You are my dope. More deadly than Afghan heroin. More dangerous than Colombian white powder,” is a selection from the lyrics of the song, “Ma Came” (“My Dope”). Dedicated to Sarkozy himself, in fact.

She is even going to be a guest editor for Madame Figaro, a French fashion magazine.

New York Magazine

Nowadays, she may wear ballet flats in order to not upstage her husband and grace her hair with tight buns, but once upon a time, this international cover girl let loose. And we’re glad that the First Lady of France knows how to have fun.
