Spunk Up Your Exercise Outfits

With the weather finally warming up, going to the gym becomes unappealing. Who wants to stay inside staring at the tiny Dodge track when they could be outside running or doing other equally awesome outdoor sports? We’ll be inside studying for most of the time until exams, so exercise might as well take advantage of the shining sun and cumulus cloud-filled sky. But outside exercise means more exposure for your outfit, so whether you’re running, biking, or rollerblading, we’ve got some easy and chic ideas for your getup.

Sports Authority

Running

If, unlike me, you’re a runner, you already know the importance of a good running shoe. But do you perhaps go running in the same Hanes tee and Soffe shorts every day? No longer! Choose shorts and shirts with breathability, and try out lighter colors like baby blue, mint green, and white to wear in the sun. And please, don’t pull a Miley Cyrus: lacy bras under low-cut V-neck tees aren’t the best for jogging.

Lululemon

Cycling

I know you may think they look dorky, but spandex shorts are the way to go when pedaling, especially in traffic. Not much is worse than biking (let’s say in Central Park) and then getting distracted (oh, let’s say by a cute boy) so much that your pants get tied up in the pedals and you fall over sideways. That’s not cool, my friends, nor is it fun or conducive to your relationship with said cutie. The moral of the story? Wear the spandex.

Lululemon

Rollerblading

If you’re like me and can’t handle a steep hill on the ‘blades, then wear some padding. All right, that looks silly, and it’s not as ubiquitous as in a skating rink, so just wear tough wrist guards and catch yourself on those. As for the outfit, try long leggings to reduce the risk of concrete burns if you take a tumble, and pair it with a graphic tee, preferably vintage. You’ve got to get that street cred somehow, right?

Trend Report: Flights of Fancy

Now that the weather is finally warming up, it’s time to put away all the black, and freshen up with some fun prints. Enter Miu Miu’s SS2010 RTW collection – Prada artfully managed to use whimsical, almost childish prints in way that doesn’t read too saccharine.

Style.com

We weren’t the only ones who loved the collection – it’s made quite an impression on the blogosphere. The Cherry Blossom Girl and Joelle van Dyne of The Owls Are Not What They Seem are two of the lucky few to get their hands on a pair of the coveted shoes from the collection. Even teens are getting into it – Tavi of Style Rookie recently got her hands on one of the naked lady printed collars.

If you’re not ready to drop the cash to get the real deal, the same look can be achieved on a student-friendly budget. Look for whimsical prints – we especially love bird prints – and be fearless in mixing them together. Just be sure that the overall tone and color of the prints doesn’t clash! Here’s some more inspiration:

Good luck! We can’t wait to see this look on campus.

Avoiding the Butler-Bound Look

There’s about a month left until final examinations, and for most of us, that means that the final papers and tests are beginning to pile up. It’s that time of year when we start to have to stay inside despite the sun and warmth due to that lovely work. And what comes out of all this work, my friends? The overwhelming appearance of sweatpants.

Don’t get me, wrong, sweatpants are quite comfortable and even experienced a fashion resurgence in the fall. But many fashionistas look to avoid those fleecy pants, adding chic while still staying comfortable . There are a few options available to you, among them the legging, the jegging, and the summer dress.

Shopbop

Leggings

Yes, leggings. They’re an old standby by now, but a good one. Just remember to wear them as what they are: leggings. Unlike what Whitney Port might tell you, they’re not pants. Pair them with a thigh-skimming tunic or tee and boots for a comfortable outfit. Add a scarf or some bangles to up the chic factor, and throw on a blazer to combat the library chills.

Shopbop

Jeggings

This option is particularly ridiculed, though store sales of the item would disagree. The problem with certain jeggings (jeans + leggings= jeggings; it’s basic math) is that they’re entirely too tight, hugging the leg like leggings but in an unforgiving textured fabric. When choosing a jegging, it’s important to find ones that fit well, not skin tight. With a nicely-fitting pair, you can wear them like your standby denims with all the comfort of a legging.

Shopbop

Summer Dress

I understand- wearing a pretty cotton summer dress to the library to study seems counterintuitive. However, it sets up a nice deal for your studying on a warm spring day- when you’re done, you’re perfectly dressed to beat it out of Butler onto the lawn for a bit of chatting and sunbathing. Not to mention that these summer tank dresses are extremely comfortable- look for one with a bit of jersey for a weighter fabric with some swing and stretch.

And for those of you skeptics who still want to look as though you live in Butler- and I know, some of you do- remember that dressing well can lead to a better self-esteem, allowing you to study better. It may sound silly, but I have a few friends who swear by it. Happy studying!

Dressing for those Warm Summer Nights

Summer days driftin’ away, to uh-oh those summer nights

Grease was right – summer nights are definitely special. With green flags on the lawns, water gurgling in the fountains, and mobs of tour groups invading campus, it sure seems like summer is in the air. I am one of those people who hate being encased in clothing – my skin needs to breathe! Thus I look forward every year to no longer having to wear pants and socks and have been eagerly anticipating the moment when I can finally stow away my jeans, kick off those closed-toe shoes, and pack away the sweaters and jackets. It’s time everyone feel predisposed to show a little skin…or a lot by the looks of those tanning in their bikinis. But while minimal coverage might be acceptable during the day under the pretext of getting some sun, we ought to show some discretion dressing for these summer nights. Warm weather means shorter skirts, bare legs, strapless tops, and exposed midriffs…but not all at once! Going out means looking one’s best but not looking like an open buffet. Here are some ideas:

Cropped tops and high waists

Cropped tops are hot this season but even if you have the perfect stomach, bearing it all won’t look classy. Wear high-waisted shorts or skirts so you are left with just a little stretch of bare enticing skin.

Shopbop.com

High-collared short dresses

A dress with a higher collar prevents too much exposure on top and draws your eyes in a straight line down your body to where the short hem will put all the linear focus on your legs.

Shopbop.com

Exposed back

Bare backs are extremely sexy and very summery. Keep it covered up front and make an impact when you turn around; everyone will be in for a pleasant surprise.

Shopbop.com

Rompers

Wanna look cute and unique? Go for a romper! There’s a great selection of them out there and even if they’re short and often low-cut or strapless, their loose and fun shape compensates for it giving a more playful look.

Just in time for Thursday night!

Channeling Blair Waldorf at Columbia

The CW Network, LLC

In case you didn’t watch last Monday’s episode of Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf might be transferring to Columbia University. According to Dorota, her maid — played by the incredibly talented Zuzanna Szadkowski (BC ‘02) — , “Even NYU minions: very second-rate.” None of us at Hoot thought NYU was a good fit for her anyways.

In this episode, Blair’s fashion designer mother, Eleanor Waldorf, asks Blair to bring 30 of her closest friends from NYU to her fashion show. The problem is, Blair doesn’t have any friends, except for her “second-rate” minions. Blair ends up hiring 30 prostitutes to pose as her friends for the event. At the end of the fashion show, three doting girls from Columbia approached her and told them that they missed seeing her on the Gossip Girl blog. “Everyone at Columbia reads Gossip Girl,” they claimed. Apparently Bwog has another rival. At the end of the episode, Blair is seen tacking a Columbia banner to her bedroom wall. Welcome to Morningside Heights, Miss Waldorf.

Okay, so Blair grew out of the extravagant headbands and knee-high socks, but she still carries a formidable style that we can all channel for our own good. After all, she dresses with a purpose and a mission, so whether we prefer flea market finds or Barneys couture, we can all take some tips for dressing purposely à la Blair Waldorf:

The CW Network, LLC

  • Overdress for every occasion. When you’re looking to make a statement and to intimidate (Blair’s favorite extracurricular activity), you should always put on your highest pair of Louboutins and wear your smartest dress. Professors will appreciate your tidiness, students will gape at your clacking heels on College Walk, and minions will come flocking with you. Maybe.
  • Be classic. No important businessperson or politician will ever be offended by your way of dress if you opt for classic, clean, and timeless pieces. Always remember that vulgarities are reserved for the non-elite — and Serena van der Woodsen. Sometimes, she doesn’t wear underwear. Blair Waldorf, however, would probably for a simple nude Calvin Klein g-string or fancy La Perla briefs.
  • Emulate a style icon consistently. Blair admires Audrey Hepburn for her graceful style and character. For our blue-blood American preppies, what about Grace Kelly for her American royalty demeanor? Or for our rebels with a purpose, what about Vivienne Westwood, with her orange hair and legacy to new wave punk?

Follow these guidelines, and Blair just might pick you as her minion when she transfers to campus next fall. Or you just might usurp her Queen Bee throne. Even if you’re wearing last year’s Tory Burch flats.

Spring Trend Alert: Printed Accessories

Among the many trends showcased on the Spring 2010 runways were print-on-print outfits, and the accessories industry was quick to follow suit, producing plenty of jewelry, shoes, handbags and scarves in every print imaginable. Particularly on our radar here at Hoot: tie-dye, tribal beaded prints, and technologically-inspired graphics. Let’s take a peek, shall we?

Shopbop

Tie-Dye

This DIY style, which cropped up in the 1960s, has been snapped up by handbag designers. Rebecca Minkoff’s embraced the style, choosing to focus on single-color tie dye such as with the Tie-Dye Morning After Mini, displayed above. Her iconic MAM bag takes a blast to the past while still staying modern and relevant in a fresh blue and antiqued gold hardware. The funky print adds a bit of sunshine to any little summer dress- though if you want to be on the trending tightwire, try pairing it with a printed dress.

Shopbop

Tribal Beaded

Native American inspired, these styles are showing up on all sorts of footwear, from sandals to flats to little booties. These House of Harlow 1960 Saloni sandals, designed by Nicole Richie, embody the luxe boho vibe that the trend emanates. Slip on your beaded footwear with a miniskirt and oversized blazer- the juxtaposition of sharp and easy makes for a chic look.

Shopbop

Techno Graphics

These colorful, almost frenetic patterns showed up on the Spring 2010 runways over and over. Incorporate this techy trend by piling on the printed bangles, like this striped Bop Bijoux set. These fair-trade bracelets in a multitude of colors make for the perfect wrist-stackers, using stripes to add a slightly zany feel. Bangles like these can virtually be paired with anything- wear them with a tan silk dress for an especially beachy feel.

Don’t fret: just because printed accessories are making a splash this spring doesn’t mean you have to do without your trusty leather carryall. On the contrary, use prints to spice up your outfit in the form of bangles, summery boots and sandals, and handbags.

Lookin’ Fresh in Three Minutes: Beauty Quickies for Any Columbia Girl

It’s Saturday! This means sleeping in for most of us true college students– I, too, woke up at 1PM today with no guilt. Unfortunately, many of us find ourselves having a hard time adjusting back to the weekday schedule, sometimes waking up 15 minutes before class. This won’t be a problem for most boys and beautiful girls. The boys can throw on a t-shirt and run to class. The naturally beautiful do not have to worry about looking scruffy, either– they always look as if they had 12 hours of beauty sleep.

However, some of us (especially I) can’t just present themselves in public right after jumping out of bed. Here’s the good news: Even under the pressing time limit, there is a way to look fresh and hide the marks of sleep deprivation and not be late for class.

Control the Brows (~30 seconds)

Don’t sigh at the unruly brows anymore. Even after a rough night’s sleep, they can be tamed. All you need is a brow gel and twenty seconds! Clean brows are essential for well-put-together look, especially when there is not my eye-make up to divide up the attention. Unruly eyebrows pointing in all directions can ruin the overall impression of a person. Brush up starting from the inner corners then outwards with Maybelline Brow Gel.

maybelline.com

Erase the bag of under-eye dark circles (~50 seconds)

benefitcosmetics.com

The most important feature of one’s face are the eyes. If the eyes look haggard and puffy with dark circles, it’s impossible to look fresh, regardless of how many millimeters of  make-up is applied to other parts of the face. I have been using Benefit’s Ooh La Lift every morning since junior year of high school– when the exhausting all-nighters started. Several pats and ooh la la! The pink brightening balm with is perfectly blended with any skin tone, upgrading the whole complexion. More reasons to love Ooh La Lift: it contains raspberry extracts and light-reflecting pigments that feel and smell soothing when applied. If you aren’t a big fan of $22 beauty experiments, try using any bright-colored shadow (non-shimmer/glitter) you already have– who says that eye shadow is only for eyelids?  Instant complexion perk-up guaranteed.

*When used with eyeliner, under-eye brighteners and concealers give a nice contrast, kicking the eyeliner into full effect.

Give Color Where It’s Needed (~30 seconds): Cheeks and/ or Lips

We’re not talking the brown eye bags or the red acne. Fresh face cannot be discussed without the perfectly subtle rosy cheeks. Say goodbye to dull face with your favorite easy-application blush! For many people, a hint of peach is the go-to tone for tired face– it gives the skin a swipe of healthy, young glow. The NARS blush in Orgasm has won many beauty awards for its subtle peachy hue that complements any skin color and just enough highlights.

sephora.com

Not a blush kind of a girl? Freshen up those colorless lips! Skip the shimmery, super reflective lip gloss for the rushed mornings. Dramatically voluminous lips and no eye-make up look unbalanced together. Lip tints are perfect for natural and quick-fix color effects. Benetint from Benefit is the true queen of lip tints– one sweep over the lower lip and press for a stain that will last over six hours. Covergirl’s Lip Stains are great, too– they have more color options.

*Bonus: Benetint can be used for the cheeks too!

*Do not EVER apply lip tint excessively– as you can tell from the name, it will stain your lips and NOT come off, no matter how hard you rub your lips with tissue. (Confession: I’ve had embarrassing days from this.)

covergirl.com, benefitcosmetics.com

Voila! You can look more like this in less than three minutes! Fresh and natural without looking like you tried too hard or not at all!

**Don’t forget that the above steps would only be most helpful with healthy, clear skin. Make sure to use concealer or light foundation, depending on your skin’s needs.

Transitional Dressing: Winter to Spring

While we may have been excited for the first snow flurries in December, around this time of year, Columbia students are itching to put away their heavy winter coats and pull out summer’s sandals and bathing suits. However, with temperatures still in the 40’s, those flirty spring dresses are still banished to the backs of closets. And so we’ve come up against the dilemma which stumps fashion mavens every year: what do we wear between seasons?

Here are our suggestions on how to transition into spring without sacrificing on style or breaking the bank:

1. Invest in a Trench Coat. With wool coats and earmuffs no longer necessary, students are looking for fresh jacket options to tide them over until the (real) start of Spring. Worn by style icons Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn (as Holly Golightly), and even Blair Waldorf, the classic trench coat will last you for years, and looks oh-so-chic in those spring showers. Why not modernize the look by trying one in an unexpected color or print, like the pastel trench coats shown at Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2010?

Style.com

2. Ditch the black tights. Dark opaques may have been your winter staple, but an inexpensive way to switch up your wardrobe is to get a few new pairs of tights. Try colored tights instead – navy and maroon are safe options, but the bravest will try mint or periwinkle blue. Sheer tights are another great option. A fun print is a way to add texture and interest to any ensemble.

AmericanApparel.com

3. Switch in oxfords in lieu of boots. Knee-high or over-the-knee boots may have carried you through the winter, but the changing seasons is a great chance (or excuse) to get a new default shoe. Lace-up oxfords in a neutral color work with a variety of looks. With Low Steps finally clear of snow, why not try a pair with a platform heel?

SeychellesFootwear.com

4. Try bright colored nails. Nail polish is a fun and inexpensive way to change up your look. Nude was a huge trend on the Spring/Summer 2010 runways, and nail polish is an unexpected way to incorporate it into your look. Pastel nails are also becoming a trend this season. Remember the Chanel Jade nail polish that everyone went crazy for? American Apparel’s Office and Essie’s Mint Candy Apple are more affordable options to get the look.

Essie.com

5. Incorporate a fun print. Embrace spring fully with florals – the more granny, the better! If florals aren’t your thing, try a less conventional print. Look to Alexander McQueen’s graphic printed dresses from Spring/Summer 2010 for inspiration. Do tie-dye shirts conjure up memories of bad summer camp projects? Think again! Proenza Schouler’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection made us all reconsider the print.

Style.com

This transition between seasons may be a difficult time for dressing, but it’s a fun chance to experiment with our wardrobes and try out those Spring/Summer trends from September. Check out Hoot’s first issue coming out in May for more ideas on how to wear Spring/Summer 2010 trends!

Do you have any transitional dressing tips not mentioned here?
